POWER: No team in the game hit so few home runs as the Mets. Their meager output, 93, was the result of the extended absences of the Carlos Brothers, who combined for 65 home runs in 2008 and 14 last season, and the difficult-to-grasp power decline of David Wright, who averaged 29 per season in four full years and hit 10 in '09. The club anticipates Carlos Beltran and Wright will return to normal, but it has no idea whether Carlos Delgado will return and/or hit; hence its search for power.

Neither signing power nor trading for it seems all that likely at this point. They may be as close to signing Jason Bay or Matt Holliday as any club, which doesn't mean they're close at all. Bay has said he doesn't need Holliday to sign for him to determine his value. Good for him, because Holliday is represented by Scott Boras, who moves at the speed of Molina (chose anyone of the three) in negotiations.

The Mets appear all but definite to use Daniel Murphy at first base, so that would preclude the return of Delgado and make left field the position for the power upgrade. Nelson Figueroa and Pat Misch have quite modest resumes that yield a composite 16-39 career record.

Marquis and Pineiro were offered by the Rockies and Cardinals, respectively, but since each is a Type B free agent, signing either would cost the Mets only a second-round selection and not be that much of disincentive.

Some people in the Mets' hierarchy believe trading for a catcher is more likely, others say it's 50-50 -- sign a free agent or make a trade.

Green's performance in late September after he began using a sub-sidearm delivery was an improvement over his previous work. But he could be non-tendered.

The club is likely to carry a player payroll less than the $143 million-plus of 2009, but if it signs one of the primary free agents, it could be comparable or greater to the '09 payroll.
