BOSTON -- The Red Sox officially took care of the main part of their catching solution for 2010, exercising All-Star Victor Martinez's $7.1 million club option on Monday. But veteran Jason Varitek, who has caught more games than any player in Red Sox history, remains in limbo.

Once the Red Sox acquired Martinez in a trade with the Indians on July 31, Varitek suddenly found himself playing a reduced role after serving as Boston's primary catcher for the past decade.

To get Martinez from the Indians, the Red Sox put together a prospect-laden package that included swingman Justin Masterson and Minor League pitchers Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price.

The Red Sox hold a $7 million club option for Martinez for 2010 that they will officially exercise any day. So, yes, Martinez will be back next season. He figures to get most of the playing time behind the plate, though manager Terry Francona will probably continue to play him at first base a couple of times a week so he can keep his legs fresh.

That said, Varitek has his own option worth $3 million that he can exercise if he chooses. The decision Varitek has to make is whether he wants to kick in that option and be a backup player for a team he has been the leader of for several years, or if he'd rather finish his career somewhere else. The other decision Varitek could always make is to retire. Stay tuned.

We are of a similar mind on this one. I felt like last year's team was a big bat short of making a stronger postseason run. The question is where does that bat come from? Trade, free agency, current player stepping his game up a notch? Also, what position will that bat play? Most of the everyday lineup from 2009 is under contract to return next season. Shortstop and left field are the two positions where there could be openings, but left field has already been a position of strength for the team offensively.

From a pure dramatic standpoint, it would be very cool. But I doubt it will happen. I think at this stage of Pedro's career, he would probably admit that the National League is a better fit for him. As we saw when Pedro returned with the Mets in 2006, he is still beloved in Boston and always will be. So why tarnish that by coming back and perhaps not being as effective? He left Boston while still in close to top form. Pedro's agents made inquires to the Red Sox last winter, and they politely declined any interest at that time.

Yes, Epstein is one of 29 general managers outside of Seattle who would love to have Hernandez as his ace. It's a lot easier said than done. It sounds like Epstein put together a huge proposal of prospects to land Hernandez last July and even that fell short. It would be a great story if the Red Sox landed Hernandez, but a lot of things would have to go right for it to happen.

They've already had a meeting with Chapman and his agent, so, sure, there's a chance. The Red Sox have never been shy when it comes to International signings. Chapman has a 100-mph heater but is still growing as a pitcher. He will probably need some seasoning in the Minor Leagues. It will be interesting to see how the market plays out for him this winter.

Interesting point. Beckett is, in fact, going into his free-agent year, which has been an underplayed story to this point. Because Beckett has never been a free agent, perhaps he wants to explore the process. Also, the Red Sox tend to be conservative when it comes to long-term contracts for starting pitchers. I think the sides will at least discuss trying to get something done, perhaps during Spring Training, when talks like that often take place.

With 11 games to go, the magic number is six. Despite what has happened the last two nights in Kansas City, the Red Sox should soon secure another playoff berth, their sixth in seven seasons during the reign of Theo Epstein.

Tonight, remember, Josh Beckett will return to the mound for his team-leading 31st start of the season. Counting this outing, Beckett could have as few as two starts remaining in the regular season. At the moment, the more significant point is that Jon Lester absolutely, positively has just two starts remaining, which raises the first of today five questions as the Sox close in on a playoff spot:

For all of the talk about Beckett candidacy for the American League Cy Young Award earlier in the year, Lester now has emerged as Boston best candidate for the award, which will likely go to either Zack Greinke or Felix Hernandez.

Based on how the Sox have set up their pitching rotation, Lester would pitch Friday at New York and either next Wednesday or Thursday. The playoffs will open on either Wednesday, Oct. 7 or Thursday, Oct. 8, depending on which series setup the Yankees elect to play (more on that in a second). There is the very real possibility that the Sox already are lining up Lester for Game 1.

For what it worth, Lester in 2009 has not faced the Los Angeles Angels, who almost certainly will be the Sox first-round opponent. Beckett is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA against the Angels.

The likelihood is four, though that depends on which series the Yankees select. As was the case last year, the American League team with the best record -- in this case, New York -- will have the right to choose its schedule for the first round. If the Yankees choose Series A, that series would begin Wednesday, October 7, and there would be an additional day off between Games 1 and 2. Series B begins Thursday, October 8, with no day off between Game 1 and 2.

So what the difference? Because of the additional off-day in Series A, the participating teams would need only three starters. In Series B, four starters are necessary unless a team opts to pitch someone on short rest. Last year, the Angels had the right to choose the series schedule and opted for Series A. Whether the Yankees would do the same remains unclear, particularly because such a decision might allow a team like the Detroit Tigers to throw ace Justin Verlander twice in the first four games.

This season, Verlander is 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA against New York. Allowing him to pitch two of the first four games of a series -- any series -- might be risky. As such, there is a chance the Sox would need only three starters in the first round, in which case Lester and Beckett would each get to pitch twice in a five-game series.

3. Assuming a matchup with the Angels, does Lester or Beckett have a decisive advantage over the other?

Overall, Beckett and Lester have had staticically similar years, though Lester ERA is now nearly a half-run lower. When both pitchers are at the top of their games, each can retire lefthanders and righthanders with relatively equal efficiency. Beckett has given up more home runs, especially of late, and Lester has a slightly higher walk rate.

One other thing to consider? This year, opposing basestealers have been successful in 14 of 16 with Beckett on the mound; they are 15 of 21 against Lester. As we all know, the Angels like to run. If the Red Sox continue to have difficulty scoring on the road -- this has been especially true in the second half -- controlling the opposing running game could be a critical factor in their ability to win. On paper, at least, Lester would seemingly give them a better chance to restrain an Angels team that is always aggressive on the bases.
